JUNIOR YOUTH CLUB

Oasis Junior Youth Club was started approximately 16 years ago when there was no other facility for 8 – 12 year olds in the area and we had the ideal location and building for this purpose. Over the years we have managed to procure funding from various sources to keep 2 Junior Youth Club Leaders employed and to keep this much needed club going.

The Junior Youth Club opens on a Friday evening from 6.15pm. to 8.15 and is open for 47 weeks in the year. The club provides a number of activities i.e. sport, art and crafts, cookery, competitive games, table tennis, pool, quizzes etc.

We have occasional outings to various places e.g. Nature Reserve, the local park, cinema, shows at the local Civic Hall. We also celebrate special dates e.g. Christmas, Easter, Halloween, Valentines day, Chinese New Year as well as fundraising activities to support Children in Need, Sports Relief, Red Nose Day. Some times we have people who come in to share other activities with the young people. We have had someone showing them soccer skills, a Ranger making bug boxes, someone playing a guitar, Chinese writing. We try to find people who can offer different experiences for the young people.

We discuss ideas with the young people and using their input produce a program of activities. We have a small kitchen in which we involve the young people and teach them about basic kitchen skills on Health and Safety and Hygiene. Sometimes things made in the kitchen are sold in the tuck shop.

We have a membership for the club. Members pay £1 for a years membership and then 20p. subs every week they attend. The money made through this and any other money made at the tuck shop are banked and used for any equipment needed.

The membership currently stand at 36 and we have had an average attendance over the last 2 months of 24. Any new membership requests are put on a waiting list until such time the membership drops. We have a system where members can bring a friend to the club and we ensure that we have contact numbers for parents/guardians for everyone in case of emergencies.
